The paper presents the ITALSAT satellite communicdtion system developed by the Italian Space Agency (ASI). The system is based on a regenera-ive switching satellite payload operating at 20 and 30 GHz. The coverage of the Italian territory is achieved by six spot beams controlled by an antenna fine pointing subsystem. This payload is called multibeam payload (MB). A second communication payload covers Italy with a global beam (GB). This payload has three transparent transponders at 20 and 30 GHz. To establish an operative system a second flight unit ( F U 2 ) is now in production. The launch is expected the end of 1993. The operative system will provide up to 24.000 bi-directional telephone connections.
