Abstract This paper traces the development of an ecological approach in prehistoric archaeology, relating it to other major theoretical developments. A distinction is drawn between a deterministic and an open‐system approach to ecology in current archaeology. The merits of these two approaches are evaluated and an attempt is made to forecast the implications that the open‐system approach will have upon future relations between archaeology and ecology.
