Sweet medicine: The mucin MUC1 is highly overexpressed on epithelial tumor cells. Glycopeptides 1 (from the repeating unit of MUC1) carrying various important sialylated tumor-associated carbohydrate antigens R were synthesized and coupled to bovine serum albumin (to generate anticancer vaccines) and to microtiter plates (to test the selectivity of the immune response).
