This review evaluates methods for detection and quantification of microcystins, cyanobacterial peptide hepatotoxins. The assessed methods include bioassays. high-performance liquid chromatography of intact and derivatized toxins, protein phosphatase inhibition assays and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Overall sampling strategy and water safety aspects are also considered. Special emphasis is given to temporal and spatial variations of bloom toxicity, depth maxima, microcystin detoxification and bioaccumulation of microcystins.
