Abstract

Abstract The magnetic properties and specific heat of cerium magnesium nitrate have been measured at temperatures between 1°k and 4·2°k. The magnetic properties can be described by a highly anisotropic g-tensor, having a very small value along the crystalline axis and a value of 1·84 perpendicular to it. The specific heat is extremely small, being given in this range of temperatures by C1 = 7·5 × 10-6 R/T 2. It is shown that the specific heat can be accounted for almost entirely by magnetic dipole-dipole interaction. The use of the salt for work below 1°k is discussed.
