A potential ossicular adhesive, bucrylate (isobutyl 2-cyanoacrylate), was placed in small amounts in 17 middle ears in 12 cats to assess both its safety and efficacy. A marked middle ear inflammatory reaction was found in every case, accompanied by damage to any bone with which it came into contact. In four ears, the full thickness of the stapes foot plate was lost and almost every other foot plate showed damage. In addition, an inner ear reaction was seen in most cases and definite inner ear damage was present in many of them. There was complete failure to achieve a functional result in the three ears where ossicular continuity was sought. We concluded that this substance is neither safe nor effective as an ossicular adhesive.
