Surprisingly, there is no full bibliography of the \nwork of the acknowledged founder of the modern \nhospice movement, who celebrates her eightieth \nbirthday this year. This, therefore, is the first paper \nin a series which will have two purposes. Firstly, it \nis an attempt to assemble a complete bibliography \nof the published writings of Dame Cicely Saunders, \nfrom 1958 to the present day; it will be published in \nfour parts, each covering a period of 10 years. \nSecondly, the bibliography has been annotated with \na view to providing an introduction to some of the \nkey points contained in these works. It is intended \nto serve as a guide to students, practitioners and \nscholars interested in better understanding the work \nof Cicely Saunders. The bibliography is not, of \ncourse, to be viewed as a substitute for reading the \noriginal works. Indeed it is hoped that it will serve \nto make these more accessible to interested readers \nwho wish to pursue the material in greater \ndepth. It is anticipated that the bibliography will further \ninform the recognition of Cicely Saunders’ \nremarkable and multi-faceted contribution to the \nwork of hospice and palliative care, stimulating \nfurther commentary and discussion.
