A purified lactogenic hormone, unlike crude pituitary extracts, has failed to initiate lactation in hypophysectomized guinea pigs. Lactogenic hormone plus the adrenal cortical hormone (Swingle-Pfiffner extract) has initiated lactation in such animals in every case.
