Growth is needed. Connected with economic growth is the concern about our resources, environment, and the effects on human health. Our economy and wealth depend on material resources. Chemistry transforms the resources into the materials and products we need: energy, housing, clothing, food, transport, appliance, and clean water. Economic growth presently implies growth in use of resources what cannot be sustained on the long run – a challenge for society as a whole, industry, and chemical engineering in particular.
