Abstract

The individual worker of Acanthomyops (Lasius) niger is shown to be dependent upon visual means for orientation when carrying larvae from an arena. Though generally the surroundings supply the necessary clues, the plane of polarisation of the light may also be used. Attention is also paid to the olfactory background though this apparently plays no part in direction finding.
