An important advantage of attending a scientific meeting is the interchange between presenters and floor discussants. In recent years, scientific programs have often lacked adequate time for this interchange. Such was not a deficit at the Satellite Conference on the Circulation held in Chicago as part of the XXIVth International Congress of Physical Sciences in 1968. This meeting brought together a large number of scientists and specifically called for the free exchange of ideas among peers after each presentation. With the editorial guidance of Drs. Fishman and Hecht, this book is the outgrowth of the symposium. The result is a superb compilation of ideas, a written record for those who attended the meeting, and an important reference source for those who were unable to attend. The text is divided into four sections with the following titles: Pulmonary Alveolar-Capillary Interface and Interstitium, Vasomotion and Electrophysiology of Smooth Muscle, Regulation of
