Abstract

Uneven penetration of soil moisture has been observed after several southern California wildfires. This condition seems to be associated with an organic coating on soil particles that makes the soil hydrophobic. Field sampling shows the ‘nonwettable’ condition to be wide‐spread in chaparral watersheds.
