Optical switching with a nonlinear photonic crystal: a numerical study

A nonlinear finite-difference time-domain method was used to investigate optical switching mechanisms with a nonlinear photonic crystal and with two electromagnetic pulses with different frequencies. It was found that the mechanism based on the shifting of the band edge required the detector to discriminate between the pump and the probe frequencies, whereas that based on frequency mixing did not.
