The fundamental transformation in family structure that is now occurring in most Western countries and the social and economic consequences of this phenomenon have provided a critical stimulus to the recent development of family demography. This state-of-the-art volume is an outcome of the work of the Scientific Committee on Family Demography and Life Cycle established by the Council of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population in 1982 with the mandate to promote research in the emerging subdiscipline of family demography and to give it visibility within the scientific community. The 18 papers in this volume cover the following major areas: measurement and estimation the family life cycle multistate life tables kin models and household projection. This book will be of interest to demographers sociologists social historians statisticians and policy makers.
