Studies 22, 399–416. This paper presents a comparative analysis of the competitiveness and performance of matched pairs of small manufacturing firms in Scotland and the Mid-West of Ireland. Several dimensions of performance are investigated and evaluations of the price and quality competitiveness of product samples are made. Based upon these results, the paper draws a number of policy conclusions most notably that the shift in state aid away from fixed to soft assets—especially towards training and quality control—should be intensified. Es werden verschiedene Dimesnionen der Leistung untersucht, und Berechnungen der Wettberwerbstähigkeit der Preise und Qualtität von Warenproben angestellt. Auf Grund dieser Ergebnisse werden in dem Aufsatz Schlüsse von grundsätzlicher Bedeutung gezogen, vor allem, dass die Verschiebung der staatlichen Beihilfe von Anlagevermögen zu neutralem—besonders bei Ausbildung und Qualitätskontrolle—verstärkt betrieben werden sollte.
