V<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub> nanoneedles were directly synthesised by a facile physical vapour deposition approach. A V<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub> nanoneedle gas sensor exhibited high reproducible sensing response towards acetone at room temperature with a good selective behavior, explained based on the energy band model.
