Investigations on the Polarity of Aqueous Solutions of Urea and Various Sugars by Means of the Solvatochromic Technique The dipolarity/polarizability and acidity of aqueous solutions of urea derivatives and sugars have been investigated by means of the solvatochromic technique employing several indicator dyes such as various pyridinium N ‐phenoxide betaine dyes, Michler's ketone and Fe(phen) 2 (CN) 2 . Increasing concentration of both urea and sugars decreases the polarity and acidity of the aqueous solution as a whole. Advantageously, in the case of urea derivatives, increasing concentration significantly improves the polarizability of aqueous solutions, which is responsible for the solubility of hydrophobic compounds in water.
