Abstract

Nitrates as inhibitors for corrosion protection systems have been widely investigated. However, in practice, the effect of NO−3 on corrosion inhibition is often ignored. Herein, the effects of NO−3 in NaCl solution on the corrosion protection of AZ91D magnesium alloy coated with silane films, are reported. The inhibition efficiency of NO−3 was determined by electrochemical tests. Scanning electron microcopy was used to examine the surface morphology of the specimen. The results showed that NO−3 could prolong the protection time of silane films remarkably. In addition, the influence of change in sodium nitrate concentration on the corrosion inhibition and the possible inhibiting mechanism are also discussed.
