Various applications require an optical mirror whose figure can be changed in a controlled manner as a response to an electrical input signal. This paper presents the theory of such a device, consisting of a single piece of piezoelectric ceramic situated in a nonuniform electric field. The surface deformation is calculated for periodic surface potential distributions on a simple geometric shape. Agreement with experimental results is good.
