Abstract Phase transitions in ferroelectromagnet materials in which a ferroelectric order exists below an antiferromagnetic transition temperature is investigated using Monte-Carlo method, based on a hybrid Ising-DIFFOUR model. The magnetization, electric polarization and their susceptibilities as well as magnetoelectric coupling are evaluated. It is demonstrated that a spontaneous magnetic order can be induced or enhanced by magnetoelectric coupling or external field. A large mangetoelectric effect is obtained. The magnetic transition characteristics and the underlying mechanisms are discussed.
