Abstract

M prostate is extremely rare as may be deducted from a review of the world's literature. The concept of Lang and Schneiders that the prostate gland consists of 2 components arising from different embryological anlagen with separate blood supplies may throw some light on the difference in the histological appearance and behavior between the mucus-forming carcinoma and the most common type of adenocarcinoma of the prostate. According to these authors, the prostate gland is composed of a cortex that they consider to be the "masculine" part and an inner or medullary part that they consider as the "feminine" part of the prostate. The clinical features of the mucus-forming adenocarcinoma suggest that this type of carcinoma may arise in the medullary part of the gland.
