All patients consumed at least 250 g ethanol/day for more than 1 year and lacked overt clinical evidence of severe malnutrition or cirrhosis of the liver. Patients were studied as near to the drinking period as possible. Fecal fat and nitrogen excretion, vitamin B12absorption,D-xylose absorption, and augmented histamine gastric analyses were performed.
