The status of development of insertion devices for the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility 6 GeV low emittance synchrotron radiation source is described. Phase I includes nine insertion devices with a magnetic field ranging from 0.4 to 1.8 T and periods from 44 to 150 mm to be commissioned in 1993. The chosen segmentation, support structure of magnetic assemblies, field measurement techniques and computational tools are described. A novel kind of helical undulator is being implemented.
