Abstract

A series of patients with a variety of retroperitoneal processes, including abscess, hematoma, and tumor, were examined by B-scan ultrasonography. The normal ultrasonic anatomy of the retroperitoneal space was first established by comparison with transverse and sagittal sections of cadaver material. It was routinely possible to outline the space occupying lesions as well as determine their consistency and relationship to surrounding organs. The value of this method of examination in the evaluation of extraorgan processes is emphasized.
