Abstract

Abstract Evidence indicating that eutectic liquids possess strong short-range ordering is presented. This evidence consists of viscosity data, relative strengths of atomic interactions, eutectic compositions, and eutectic temperatures. These liquids appear to consist of specific metal-metalloid molecular ions immersed in a gas of conduction electrons. Thus they have highly non-regular structures. The proposed cluster structures have important implications for crystallization behaviour and glass structures that derive from them.
