Abstract

Recently, reported transmission distances of 2.488-Gb/s repeaterless systems surpassed 400 km with three publications of 423 km [1], 410 km [2], and 407 km [3], respectively. The major enabling technologies are high-power pump sources and dispersion compensating fiber, which allows low-loss silica-core fiber to be used for the signal path. In this paper, we are taking advantage of both of these technologies as well as forward error correction (FEC) coding to obtain a maximum transmission distance of 529 km equivalent to a fiber loss for the signal of 93.8 dB.
