Abstract

AbstractThe deformation and fracture of Zircaloy-4 and pure zirconium sheets having strong (0002) textures were studied under plane-strain compression at temperatures from 20° to 800°C. Zircaloy-4 underwent a ductility transition from limited strain (0.1 to 0.3) to extensive fracture-free flow (> 0.6) at about 300°C; pure zirconium was ductile at all temperatures. These differences were traced to others in deformation mechanisms. Below 300°C, Zircaloy-4 accommodated compression along [0001] by 〈c + a〉 slip; these dislocations were mainly confmed to thin bands oriented close to {1124}. In pure zirconium {1122} twinning followed by second- and third-order retwinning tended to distribute strain more uniformly. Above 300°C both materials deformed by a combination of {1011} twinning and 〈c + a〉 slip.Fracturing in Zircaloy-4 was by highly localized shear along thin bands of {1124} orientation. From an analysis based on measured strain-hardening behaviour and standard heat flow equations, it is suggested that localized shear can be brought about by thermal softening during slip-band formation.
