Abstract Energy losses resulting from friction between contact surfaces in an internal combustion engine have been studied intensively by a considerable number of tribologists. Still, the automotive industry needs further improvements to reduce friction-related energy losses in engines and drive systems. This problem can be solved by applying porous surfaces generated, for example, by laser surface texturing.
