Abstract

Abstract Internal friction can be caused by precipitates if they produce internal strains, have elastic moduli different from the matrix or if they have incoherent or semicoherent interface boundaries. By considering the interaction energy with an externally applied stress field, the possible internal friction effects are discussed. It is shown that an internal friction peak can only be caused by interface relaxation in semi‐coherent or incoherent interface boundaries.
