Abstract

Since past and recent studies have suggested that multiple sclerosis and lead poisoning are related, five patients with multiple sclerosis were evaluated for plumbism using current in vivo methods. These included analyses of lead stores, mobilizable lead, and blood and urine lead levels. The results showed no association between lead poisoning and multiple sclerosis, either early or late in the disease. The findings would apply to acute or chronic plumbism and to the effects of lead that might be induced by repeated mobilization from storage sources.
