Abstract

A laboratory experiment is described that requires each student to determine the rate constant for the hydrolysis of aspirin at three different pH values. Individual results from each student are compiled to provide a class set of rate constant versus pH data. The students prepare a pH–rate profile for the hydrolysis of aspirin and analyze this profile to determine the mechanism and type of catalysis of the hydrolysis at different pH values.
