Will the coming years bring the dawn of software's golden age or an ever-worsening nightmare of disasters and cutbacks? The author explains why either outcome, or both, are possible. He discusses improvements such as new application development tools and advanced hardware technology. He then focuses on the Year 2000 problem in contrast.
