EFFECT OF POPULATION DENSITY ON CYST PRODUCTION IN HETERODERA ROSTOCHIENSIS WOLL. BY J. KORT Plantenziektenkundige Dienst, Wageningen, the Netherlands The reproduction rate in Heterodera rostochiensis at very low inoculum levels increases as density increases up to a maximum. In addition a negative density dependent factor works for higher population levels. Chitwood & Feldmesser (1948), Oostenbrink (1950), Fenwick & Reid ( 1 9 5 3 ) , Schmidt ( 1 954 ) , Reinmuth & Schmidt ( 1 959 ) and Hague & Hesling ( 1 9 58 ) , have studied in pots the relationship between initial and final population
