Abstract

Abstract A retrospective analysis of the use of lumbar epidural analgesia in the Leeds Maternity Hospital between 1969 and 1978 has been carried out. The percentage of patients with epidural blocks has been compared with the instrumental delivery and cesarean section rates for each of the 10 years. The data shows that while the epidural rate has risen from 0% to almost 40%, the operative delivery rates have remained almost constant.
