Abstract

This study provides strong evidence that Spartathlon, a prolonged endurance exercise resulting in severe stimulation of inflammatory mediators followed by muscle and liver damage, does not induce procalcitonin secretion. The findings cannot directly be applied to other causes of aseptic inflammation.
