Abstract

The most versatile polydiacetylene system reported to date from the perspectives of systematic chemical modification and processability was obtained from γ-radiation polymerization of the alkoxycarbonylmethylurethanes of 9-(N-methyl-N-phenylamino)-5,7-nonadiyn-1-ol. These polymers self-assemble into an acentric array, and they are readily modified by functionalization of their dialkylaniline group. The modified polymers provide examples of materials with interesting second-order nonlinear optical properties and the first case of a rigid-rod polymer that exhibits photofabricated surface relief gratings.
