Abstract

The author attempts to determine the size of the population of Palestine in the Roman-Byzantine period. Various methods for estimating ancient populations are described and evaluated. The population size of the Negev, the urban areas, and the entire country is estimated on the basis of areal size of towns and the grain-growing capacity of Palestine
