Summary Complement‐fixing antibodies to Babesia equi and/or B caballi were detected in 4 out of 14 English‐born foals of Portuguese‐ born, seropositive Lusitano mares. The titres in the mares remained constant throughout 3 months' observation, whereas those in the foals declined steadily to extinction by about 4 months from birth. This suggests that the antibodies were due to passive transmission of maternal antibodies rather than to infection of the foals in utero .
