Abstract Sampling unconsolidated soft‐bottom sediments in shallow to moderately deep canals is difficult. A sediment core sampler was constructed from commercially available parts, utilizing a readily removable plastic liner. The removable prefit liner facilitates easy removal, transport, and storage of the core, and reduces the likelihood of core contamination from sample to sample. The device also consists of a transparent polycarbonate tube with a removable stainless‐steel cutting head. Soft‐bottom core samples up to 30‐cm in length were taken in water as deep as 8 m. The device is relatively lightweight and can be used from a small boat.
