An environmentally friendly new catalyst for the alternating copolymerization of ethene and CO in water: The water-soluble Pd/D-o-APPr-S catalyst (D-o-APPrS=1,3-C3H6[P(C6H3-2-OMe-5-SO3Na)2]2) is readily accessible, conspicuously active, and air stable in solution. Alternating copolymers with a high molecular weight are formed. The catalyst (an intermediate is shown) does not require a brønsted acid cocatalyst and can be recovered after the reaction.
