Abstract

The presence of toxic organic micropollutants in municipal sewage sludges is a major problem on account of risks associated with the agricultural valorization of the sludges. Therefore, a process that would enable reduction in organic pollutant concentrations in sewage sludges would be of great interest. The aim of this study was to investigate the use of the Fenton's reagent (Fe(II)-H 2 O 2 ) to degrade polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sewage sludges. As the Fenton's reagent generates hydroxyl radicals that further oxidize pollutants in the solution, the authors' efforts focused on finding experimental conditions that would ensure stability of aqueous PAH solutions, and also allow the Fenton's reaction to occur in the medium. It appeared that Teflon recipients along with the addition of an organic solvent or the use of surfactants were required for obtaining stable PAHs solutions. However, a nonionic surfactant (Brij-35) was more suitable as it minimizes hydroxyl radical consumption.
