Abstract Radioactive pollution of the algae collected at Şile and Sinop on the Black Sea coast of Turkey was investigated after the Chernobyl accident. The findings were compared with the results on the algae which had been collected before the accident. The highest accumulation of 137Cs radionuclide was found in Chaetomorpha linum of green algae. The radioactivity reached a peak in all the samples collected soon after the accident in 1986 and gradually diminished in the samples of 1987 and 1988.
