Abstract A study of the dielectric dispersion in the incommensurate phases reveals a simple relaxational behavior with characteristic frequencies in the microwave region. Electric bias fields shift the transition temperatures and also induce further commensurate ferroelectric phases. Most phase transitions of the incomplete devil's staircase of this substance show up in an investigation of the thermal expansion measured along the three orthorhombic axes.
