Porcine Xenograft Burn Dressings

Abstract

Early use of porcine skin and mafenide acetate (Sulfamylon Cream) in burn wound care was reported to produce early eschar separation and decrease burn sepsis and pain. Critical evaluation of 20 patients was performed comparing xenograft and mafenide to mafenide alone on the same or similar burn in acute burn surface management with use of the patient as his own control. No difference was found in the interval to eschar separation and healing or autografting. Similarly, no difference was noted between the two treatment areas by skin biopsy or incidence of burn wound infection.
