Metal chelates of some Schiff bases derived from diamines and 2-hydroxyacetylacetophenone with Cr3+, Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Cd2+ of stoichiometric ratios 1:1 and 2:1 (M:L) have been synthesized and characterized by different spectrophotometric techniques. It is found that the coordination site of ligands differs depending on the kind of metal ions. Thus, Cr3+, Fe3+, and Co2+ enter in the outer O2O2 compartment, whereas Ni2+, Cu2+, and Cd2+ enter into N2O2 site. The g-values of Cu2+ complexes suggest square-planar geometry; this is confirmed from the ESR spectra of its complexes.
