Abstract The rate of NH 3 volatilization and the rate of water evaporation from soils followed different functions. These functions were not affected by differences in soil texture, soil water, speed, or relative humidity of air flowing over the soil surface. A linear relationship was observed between the rate of NH 3 applied (up to 600 ppm.) and NH 3 volatilized. The NH 3 losses from finer textured soils were proportional to their original soil pH's. The larger NH 3 losses from the coarse textured soil indicate that soil texture is a key factor in NH 3 volatilization.
