Above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST), the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) nuclei formed by the hydrophobic oligomers were used as non-cross-linked templates, then coated with cross-linked PNIPAM shells. Reducing the temperature below the LCST led to the dissolution of the non-cross-linked templates. Hollow spheres were finally obtained via a one-pot process.
