Shock waves traveling at speeds in excess of ${10}^{8}$ cm/sec (Mach number \ensuremath{\ge} 1000) in deuterium gas at 50 mTorr and room temperature (${n}_{1}=1.3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{15}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$) have been created in a 3-m-long, electromagnetically driven coaxial shock tube, and neutrons have been observed.
