Abstract The surface wind in the Straits of Gibraltar is determined by the interplay of its inclination to blow towards the end where surface pressure is lowest when the air is stable and its tendency to follow the upper wind if convection is active. The importance of cold pools of air lying below mountain‐top level is discussed and various kinds of wind reversal are described.
