As a start to my lecture, I should like first of all to express my deep gratitude for being given this opportunity to come and speak in the scientific session of the Society representing the traditions of British science in the field of fertility and reproduction. I hold this as a great honour, and it will also be very important and helpful to me in my future work, as I know how important it is to have the opportunity of learning from these traditions. In recent years, more and more attention is being paid to the regulation of spermiogenesis and to the possibilities of influencing therapeutically this somatic function in a positive or negative way. Mostly, substances of a hormonal character are being studied, particularly the fertility-controlling steroids (Hoagland, 1959).
